Faith at Home by Christine Bitgood

Many years ago, my husband and I wrote a puppet script entitled, “The Greatest Thing.”  In this skit a little girl is traveling to her grandparents’ house, and in the airport she decides to ask everyone she meets what they think is the most important thing in life. The different answers she gets, such as: an education, money, fame, music and drugs, are not the most important thing in life. The most important thing is to know Jesus, to have a relationship with Him. In the puppet show we say, “...to have Jesus in your heart.” But what does that mean?

What is the most important thing in life?

When your children are grown, what is the most important thing that you want them to have? As a parent you want them to be independent, to be able to take care of themselves, to understand finances, to have a good job, a good education, and all of those things. But really, what is the most important thing?

I believe the most important thing that we can pass on to our children is our relationship with God. Do they know who they are? Do they know who God is? And what he has done for them through his sacrifice? And... have they accepted Christ? Has his sacrifice become real in their lives? This is the most important thing.

There will come a day, if it hasn’t already, when your kids will ask you, “Mom, Dad, how did you become a Christian? How do you know what is going to happen to you when you die? Mom, Dad, what is going to happen to me? Can Jesus be my Forever-Friend?”  Will you be ready when they ask these questions? Do you have a plan or a strategy on how to answer?

The greatest privilege on earth is to lead a person to the Lord, to introduce them to have their own relationship with God. What an honour to introduce your child to Christ.

Through this column my desire is to inspire and equip parents in their God-given responsibility of bringing their children up in the faith. In my next column I will give the reasons why I have chosen to write this kind of article.
